Tile that combines two or more materials will bring complexity and visual texture to your space. Here, the Divisa Storm tile elegantly blends marble and glass for a striking design. 4. Incorporate a Stunning Picture Frame

A tile “picture frame” is created by framing a decorative tile with trim pieces, such as Hixtons and Somersets. This makes a perfect centerpiece for your glass tile backsplash. Here, the expressive blues and greys in the Blue Twilight Brick tile enhance the elegant grey veining in the Hampton Carrara Chevron tile, resulting in a highly designed, cohesive space. Achieve this effect by layering trim pieces to highlight your favorite mosaic or patterned tile.

5. Create Movement With a Chevron Pattern

A dynamic shape, combined with striking color variation, infuses this space—designed by A. Dorazio—with a lively sense of movement. We love how the grey, beige, and white tones in the Alato Beachwalk Chevron tile coordinate with the white cabinets and grey-veined white marble countertop.

Ready for a room refresh? Add elegance–and protection against messes–with a luxurious new kitchen backsplash. Read on for 14 gorgeous marble tile ideas to transform your space into a true marvel.

1. Combine Warm and Cool Neutrals

One of our favorite design trends is mixing warm and cool neutrals to achieve an inviting and visually interesting space. This luxe kitchen backsplash, designed by @cjuncaj, features the expressively veined Firenze Calacatta tile. With its grey, beige, brown and cream tones, this tile creates balance while making a bold statement.

2. Add Elegance With a Leaf-Shaped Mosaic

Give your backsplash a beautiful sense of movement with a marble mosaic. This stunning space, designed by @ckdesignernicole, features the Elia Honed by Alison Victoria tile. 3. Create a Slab Effect

Achieve the luxurious “slab” look with a large rectangular marble tile, like the 12″ x 24″ Calacata Evora tile shown here. Larger tile requires fewer grout joints, resembling the appearance of a single slab of marble. You can also obtain the slab marble look with large-format porcelain tile, available in sizes up to 48″ x 48″.

This kitchen features a large white marble tile backsplash installed with few and subtle grout lines for a "slab" effect.
Featuring: Calacata Evora. Design by Angelia Guthrie.

4. Mix Marble and Metal

Layering materials adds visual texture to your space. The Palermo Noir Stone Hex tile, featured on this stylish kitchen backsplash, combines rich black marble with small pieces of brushed bronze. We love how the chic bronze accents complement the metal faucet and fixtures.

5. Get a Modern Farmhouse Look With a Basketweave Mosaic

This kitchen, designed by Timber Trails, showcases elevated modern farmhouse design. The Sampson mosaic tile features an exquisite basketweave pattern of white and beige marble. Paired with open shelving and wooden accessories, this backsplash embodies the cozy-chic aspect of modern farmhouse style. 6. Set a Mood With Grey Marble

Love the tone of a cloudy sky? Bring it indoors with an expressive grey tile, like the Bianco Colorato shown here. The soft light and dark grey veining are beautifully balanced by subtle beige tones, creating a harmonious neutral look. We love how this gorgeous grey complements the white cabinets and wood shelves.

7. Cast a “Hex”

Available in a range of sizes, colors and materials, hexagon tile is a retro shape that has found a fresh application in our spaces in recent years. Marble, with its vivid veining–bold or subtle, like the soft grey featured in the Royal White Hex tile—adds a sense of movement to your hexagon tile backsplash.

8. Elevate Your Space With a Waterjet Mosaic

Glass and marble are elegantly combined in the Northbrook Glass with Black Marquina tile. Created using high-powered jets of water that carve intricate grooves in the hard stone, waterjet mosaics combine natural stone with glass, metal or mother-of-pearl. As an added bonus, the glass in this mosaic captures light, brightening the cooking space.

9. Create a Rustic Look With Tumbled Marble

The worn appearance of tumbled marble is achieved by placing the stone in a rotating drum with rocks, sand and water. The result is a beautifully textured tile that is both refined and rustic. This charming kitchen, designed by Esslinger Design Co., features a backsplash of Meram Blanc Carrara tumbled marble subway tile, which creates an elevated brick wall feel.

10. Add Art Deco Charm

Curves and geometric shapes are hallmarks of classic Art Deco design. This style, popularized in the 1920s, has reemerged in the 2020s with a contemporary twist—and we’re loving it! Here, the stylish Christie Volakas mosaic tile, featuring lush marble and gilded metal accents, creates a space that Gadsby would adore.

This V-shaped tile creates a pleasing zigzag pattern that adds a sense of movement to this kitchen. The natural grey veining adds texture, complementing the organic elements, such as the wicker lamp shade and open wood shelving.  If you love this classic look, explore our wide assortment of chevron tile.

12. Add a Marble Tile “Picture Frame”

Make your favorite marble mosaic a focal point by showcasing it in a tiled picture frame. This technique, created using decorative trim to frame a patterned or mosaic tile, adds a highly designed, picturesque element to your space. It’s also a great way to add a touch of luxury while staying within budget.

14. Choose a Diamond-Shaped Tile for a “Cut Above”

Bold grey veining adds movement to this opulent backsplash. The Africa Tempesta Wheaton tile features beautiful diamond and chevron shapes, enhancing the dynamic quality of the design. We love how the cloudy grey tile contrasts with the white countertop.

Two of our favorite hues–green and blue–are becoming increasingly popular in interior design due to their ability to boost serotonin and create connection to the natural world. From pale neutrals to brilliant jewel tones, here are 10 unique tile ideas to inspire you to incorporate blue and green into your kitchen backsplashes and walls.

When choosing tile for your kitchen, you need to consider not only how it will look in that room but also how your flooring choice will look as it transitions to your great room, dining room or living room. Here are nine tile and wood floor pairings that provide easy flow from room to room.

1. Pair Wood With an Ornate Patterned Tile

A beautiful patterned tile will give your space distinction as well as provide an elegant pairing with a wood floor. The ornate Morris & Co. Pure Net Black Ink tile elevates this space and complements the natural wood floors (as well as the gorgeous floral wallpaper) giving this home a hand-crafted feel.

This kitchen features a black lace pattern floor and white marble wall tile.

2. Ceramic Tile to Wood Floor Transition

Man-made ceramic and porcelain tiles offer a wide range of styles, shapes and designs. The Star ceramic tile gives this space, designed by Callaway Homes, an elevated “modern farmhouse” aesthetic. The flooring creates a clear delineation between the kitchen and living space, yet the black and white patterned tile pairs well with the wood floors.

3. Use Wood-Look Porcelain for a Cohesive Look

If you want to extend the look of wooden floors into your kitchen, durable and easy-to-clean wood-look porcelain will give you a natural appearance in a material well-suited to handling traffic and mess. Wood-look tile can be used to create cohesion between two separate but closely related rooms, as At Home With Ashley has done in this kitchen/dining space.

This bright, colorful kitchen features white subway tile backsplash and a wood-look porcelain tile floor.
Featuring: Baltimore Beige Wood Look and Regent Bianco. Design by At Home with Ashley.

4. Tile Your Kitchen Island

If your kitchen or great room already features wood flooring, consider showcasing a favorite tile in a more unconventional spot, such as the side of a kitchen island. In this cozy-chic kitchen by @courtneypillion, the Star tile adds a delightful, unexpected design element.

This kitchen features a black star-patterned tile kitchen island.

5. Add Interest With a Diamond-Shaped Tile

Shape is another way to add distinction to your floors. Consider using tile shapes with diagonal lines, such as diamonds, chevrons or hexagons, to play up the contrast in a tile to wood transition. This stylish kitchen, designed by @jenpanattoni, featuring the Diamond White City tile is a case in point.

6. Create a Classy Pairing With Stone-Look Tile

Stone or stone-look tile and hardwood are a natural pairing. This kitchen, designed by Rashida Banks, uses the Aqua Nero Matte porcelain tile. The rich veining in the tile adds visual texture that complements the organic woodgrain in the living room floor.

Whether you’re looking for ideas to refresh your current kitchen or planning a remodel, these creative tile pairings will help you master one of our favorite trends for 2024–wood cabinets. Read on for patterns, unique shapes and subway tile designs that complement a variety of wood finishes.

1. Backsplash Tile With Oak Cabinets

A neutral light wood is the great base for a fun and funky pattern. The curved pattern of the Elipse Azul tile echos the woodgrain in theses kitchen cabinets for wonderful, mesmerizing movement. The slightly muted dark blue with off-white coloring of this patterned tile complements this light oak wood.

2. Create a Natural Transition

The Tribeca Oatmeal subway tile provides a balanced transition between the white wall cabinets and wood base cabinets in this bright, modern kitchen. The glossy finish on this creamy subway tile adds shine to this kitchen, so that in the right light the wall looks white, but the color variation creates interest.

3. Make it Monochromatic

Beige tiles paired with maple wood create an elegant, monochromatic color scheme as is proof in this beautiful minimalist kitchen. The curves in the Wave Old Cream tile lends softness to this design with its serene neutral palette. We also love how the white grout joints complement the white light fixtures and countertops.

4. Add Depth With Dark Colors

Pair a dark color with a darker wood cabinet for moodier design that gives your kitchen richness. The dark wood base cabinets complement the vibrant color of the Wave Blue Reef tile. This tile might be too dark with wall cabinets, but the open shelving allows for the light to pass through and reflect off the glossy tile.

5. Metallic Patterned Backsplash

A sparkling metallic pattern adds glamour to this ultra-chic kitchen designed by Annie Selke. The reflective pattern of the Annie Selke Goldleaf Speckle tile shines next to the blond wood and white cabinets. The pattern tile creates a visual transition between the wall and base cabinets, by maintaining the neutral color palette.

6. Complement Your Countertops

If you have wood cabinets and granite countertops, then a handmade-look subway tile, like the Annie Selke Artisanal White tile shown here, will add charm to your traditional kitchen aesthetic. The uneven surface edges add detail to this design that complement the dark wood of the cabinets and brown granite.

7. Groove-y Design

Grooved 3D tile complements the woodgrain in stained wood cabinets. The raised line design on the 4-D Diagonal White tile adds a uniformed movement to a space that is already alive with the movement. The geometry of the tile contrasts the organic flow of the woodgrain for a balance of the natural and engineered.

8. Neutral Backsplash Tile With Dark Wood Cabinets

If your cabinets are dark, a light, cool neutral will help balance the tone of your kitchen. The soft shade of the Neo Hex Gloss Blue-Grey tile provides a lightness to the heaviness of the cabinets, and the glossy finish reflects the light, brightening the prep space. The elongated hexagon tile creates a sleek pattern that adds interest to the minimalist wooden cabinets.

9. Add Drama With Contrasting Grout

A black tile with white grout or a white tile with black grout–like the Imperial Brite White tile shown here–will add a subtle sense of drama to your space. Perfect for creating interest to a minimalist wood cabinet design. We love how the black grout complements the black range hood, shelf and handles in this modern kitchen.

10. Be Authentic With Handmade Zellige Tile

Crafted by hand, Moroccan Zellige tile is truly one of a kind. The subtle variations in size, shape, glaze and color will give your backsplash character that pairs perfectly with the unique look of natural wood. This kitchen designed by Fox Homes uses the Zellige White Gloss tile. The effect is a crisp, clean and creative aesthetic.

The handmade-look details of this tile add charm to this patterned tile and complement the stained wood cabinetry. 12. Keep It Crisp and Clean With White Tile

From blond to dark wood, you can’t go wrong with crisp and clean white tile pairing. We love how this kitchen designed by Molly Howe Design uses the Hex Matte White tile to create a wonderfully textured white backsplash. The white range hood and countertops add to the crispness of this design.

13. Celebrate Your Style With an Art Deco Mosaic

The beauty of wood cabinets is that they will complement a range of styles, so your tile choice may determine whether your look is midcentury modern or modern farmhouse or coastal. The gorgeous flapper-era design of the Skyline with Gold stone mosaic tile transforms this modern kitchen design with the sunning gilded geometrical shapes of art deco.

This picture frame designed by Sutherland Home features the Ancient Cordoba tile with its intricate and ornate design that elevates the simple kitchen. 2. Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Floor

If Joanna Gaines is your style icon, then your ideal kitchen is probably large, homey and features a farmhouse sink. The Annie Selke Farmhouse Hex (shown here in White and Sage Green) will turn even a small space into a cozy-chic haven. For more ideas on incorporating modern farmhouse style into your design, check out this style guide.

We love how the coordinating tile makes the small space feel cohesive and uncluttered.

Like the look of wood but are afraid it won’t hold up to the messes in the kitchen? The Manhattan Mercury tile features a contemporary take on traditional parquet floors and as an added bonus, the large format makes this small space appear more expansive.

Pure Net Black Ink tile is based on the iconic British designer’s classic wallpaper designs and is just as charming for a floor as it is on a wall. Shop our exclusive Morris & Co. Collection for more artisanal colors and patterns.

11. Limestone Checkerboard

Checkerboard makes for fun and classic floors. This chic kitchen designed by Timber Trails uses Silver Mist and Noir limestone tiles for a winning floor design. We love how the natural veining in the stone adds interest to this floor. The muted black, white and grey tones throughout the room give this space a moody, elevated aesthetic, but we could see these chic floors being incorporated into a more colorful design.

12. Versailles Pattern

Squares and rectangular tiles of various sizes go into creating a classic Versailles pattern. The Queen Beige Tumbled Small Versailles marble floor tile contributes to the classiness of this chic, modern kitchen designed by Wit and Delight. 4. Angelia Gutherie’s Chic Condo Kitchen

The heavy, wood cabinets made this condo kitchen feel dark and constrictive, while the blue tile accent piece created visual clutter. With a modern marble slab design, Angelia Gutherie transformed this open-concept condo kitchen into a bright and airy space. The subtle grey and taupe veining in the Calacata Evora Honed marble creates a wonderful sense of movement and light visual texture that provides the perfect background to the open shelving display. The large-format tiles require fewer grout lines, creating a sleek cohesive and expansive look.

5. The Birds Do Thus’ Classic Marble Bathroom

Amanda Yong of The Birds Do Thus renovated her bathroom to fit the aesthetic of her 1912 home. This zen bathroom remodel by Emerson Studios combines warm and cool neutrals. The wooden cabinets are warm and organic in contrast to the Chalk Grey RMB floor tile’s cool, concrete look. The circular globe light and arched mirrors work to soften this design–creating a ying to the yang of the floor geometric diamond shape.

Featuring: Chalk Grey RMB. Design and photography by Emerson Studios.

8. DGK Design & Build’s Kitchen

This dated kitchen needed a modern facelift. DGK Design + Build used our most popular subway tile, Retro Lino, to create a classically timeless backsplash. By keeping the kitchen completely monochromatic, this space is easy to update with the simple addition of some colored accessories.
